I am an Australian and i lived in Bosnia for 4 months knowing hardly any of the Bosnian language, but by simply watching Bosnian subtitled TV, listening constantly & deciphering conversations locals would have and occasionally looking words up in a dictionary, i have learnt A LOT!! My #1 tip for learning a language is to live amongst it & be forced to speak it!

well i think you should try to think on the word as a thought an not as a english word translated to bosnian so when you say the word nebo, for instance, you should have the picture of the sky in your head not the word sky, so have i learned english
good luck

the way I learned English is that I was put in a situation where I had to learn it – I guess people find a way to learn something when they have to – try to use dictionaries and translations (of English sentences) to a minimum when communicating
when the process gets really hard and irritating you know you are learning – the best way to learn a language is in huge chunks so do as much of learning as you can in one study session

hehe that computer program sounds funny
it sounds like Chinese lady speaking Bosnian
learn as much of vocabulary as you can – and don’t worry if have accent Bosnian people don’t mind it just try to enunciate those Bosnian words as best as you can – given that as you said words in Bosnian are spelled phonetically so if you cannot make out what people are saying you can figure it out … hopefully that is making some sense

I’m trying to learn Bosnian too and using the same programme XD Unfortually I’ve only learnt the days of the week as I only started 2 days ago.
Not really any tips but flash cards have halped me loads, make a set and go though them in the morning and and free time during the day.

Find some Bosnian people in your area and spend some time with them, have ‘Bosnian only’ time together……

May be you should label everything!

standing up! i’ll try that – perhaps even pacing the room and gesticulating too! thanks for the tip.

good point – although one advantage with Bosnian is it’s all spelt phonetically, so once you know how each letter should be pronounced it’s not too complicated to read stuff.

You should write anything on note cards and bring them with you while going on errands. I know it sounds silly, but you should stand up while learning Bosnian because people in general communicate most of the time on their feet. This is because an English teacher in Japan once told me that his adult students always wanted to sit down while reciting English, then he made them stand up so that those students could apply their skills to the real world. Good luck!

When you label everything. Also put on the label how it is pronounced! That way you won`t be saying it wrong!
Be good….

label items around the house… do you remember the Cleland’s had everything in thir house labelled in french? (i think it was them)

Commiseration! I enjoyed evening classes, where we would talk about everyday topics, but you haven’t time for that. Labelling is very good. Perhaps you could have a 15 minute period each day when you and Rowan only ‘communicated’ with one another in your new language! Simple phrases like: “where is the pepper?” and other useful stuff! It does work. Repetition is the key.

I shall make lists – and perhaps even prove it in a future video.
